We understand that sometimes, a 15-minute consultation may not be long enough for you to have all of the questions you have for you GP about your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment and prognosis answered. A consultation might result in information overload and you can’t quite remember everything that you discussed with your GP, or you might think of new questions once you get home.
Rather than heading to “Doctor Google”, which will often be unreliable (and sometimes unnecessarily frightening), we suggest you use the following links which provide health information which is both reliable and designed to be easy for non-professionals to understand:
Colds and flu - also see information about why your doctor is unlikely to prescribe antibiotics for respiratory tract infections here and here
Immunisations: Health.vic and Immunisation Foundation of Australia
Other conditions: Better Health Channel
Symptom Checker: Health Direct can help you decide what to do next. Note that if Symptom Checker suggests you see a doctor but we are closed, consider calling our After Hours Service (or call 000 in an emergency)
Pathology Tests Explained - information about pathology tests
Inside Radiology - information about radiology tests
Of course, you can always book a follow up appointment to discuss your condition further. If you have a lot of questions, try writing them down before the appointment so you don’t forget, and consider booking a long appointment if you think you’ll need the additional time.
